Posage Veterinary Behavior Services

Consultation

How It Works

Step by step support for your pet

When you schedule an appointment, you should expect to have our understanding, compassion and support. Dr. Posage has years of experience guiding pet owners through treatment options that best fit your unique situation.

  • When you are ready, contact us, so we can start the scheduling process. We are accepting new patients, but have a waitlist. When a appointment time becomes available, you will be asked to:

    • Complete a detailed intake survey

    • Authorize release of your pet’s medical records

    • Reserve your appointment with a non-refundable partial prepayment

There will likely be a longer wait for your visit than you would like. If you were referred, it is because your pet has a significant behavior concern that deserves immediate attention and we are sorry that we are unable to see your pet right now. To understand why, please check out our FAQ page. You can make use of this time by looking for a trainer to work with, educate yourself about your pet’s behavior and body language (links page), and implement behavior management. We also suggest that you get back in touch with your veterinarian for assistance.

  • To get the most out of your visit, we suggest the following:

    • Review our directions and tips about parking.

    • Download our app where you can get text us, see your appointments, and text us.

    • Record your pets behavior and environment, but only if you can do so safely.

    • Let us know if you require special accommodation. Our office is wheelchair accessible.

    • Let your veterinarian know that you have a visit scheduled.  Update any wellness lab work and vaccinations.

    • We require a current rabies vaccination prior to office visits.

  • Please arrive with your pet on a secure leash or in a carrier.  Feel free to checkin by phone or text from your car and let us know if you need assistance.  All household members are welcome and encouraged to come to the visit.  Please also bring:

    • High-value treats (don’t feed your pet a big meal before you come)

    • Training equipment

    • Something to take notes if you wish (a detailed report will be provided)

  • This is where the magic happens—going home with your pet and putting everything in place. We strive to create a plan that feels achievable and will send you resources to help you learn appropriate techniques. In many canine cases (and some feline), just 5-10 minutes of daily training can yield excellent results. However, the focus will often be on how you manage interactions and the environment for your pet. You are not on your own and are encouraged to reach out with any questions as you implement the plan.

  • Follow-up appointment scheduling depends on the type and severity of your pet’s behavior problem.  All pets on prescribed medication must have an initial recheck between 2-6 weeks, which maybe scheduled at the office or virtually.

Medication rechecks are generally 30 minutes. Longer visits may be required if other aspects of a plan need to be discussed or behavior modification. These visits are an important opportunity to:

    • Evaluate your pet's response to treatment

    • Review your pet's health

    • Respond to questions or concerns regarding your pet's behavior

    • Adjust and renew prescription medication (if needed)

    • Establish a follow-up plan

    • Develop a written progress report for your pet's medical records
